Record of UN activities in connection with crop substitution programs
1949 Commission of Inquiry on the Coca Leaf to Peru and Bolivia.
1956 Following the prohibition of opium cultivation in Iran, an FAO exploratory mission was sent to deter-mine the kind of assistance that might be given.
1957-58 An FAO survey mission to determine crop substitu-tion and agricultural development needs in former opium lands.
1958 Under United Nations Technical Assistance (UNTA) sponsorship, a consultant was assigned to advise on socio-economic measures to replace opium cultivation, in Afghanistan.
1960 Under UNTA sponsorship, an expert was assigned to advise on the resettlement of hill tribes engaged in opium cultivation in Thailand.
1962 Sponsored again by UNTA, an expert was assigned to advise on resettlement of hill tribes engaged in opium cultivation in Thailand.
1964 UNTA sponsored a preliminary joint survey of the economic and social needs of opium-producing regions in the Union of Burma, with participants from WHO, the Burmese government, and the Division of Narcotic Drugs.
1966 A survey mission to Thailand to assess the economic and social requirements of the opium-producing regions with a view to eradicating poppy cultivation; experts and secretariat services were contributed by UN, FAO, ECAFE, and the Division of Narcotic Drugs' outposted officer.
1967 A member of the Divison of Narcotic Drugs visited Lebanon to obtain information on the sunflower operation in the Baalbek/Hermel region.
1970 UN mission to Thailand.
1971 UN mission to Thailand to draw up and sign a Plan of Operations for Drug Abuse Control in Thailand.
1972 Head of UNFDAC visited Burma, Thailand. A UN/FAO exploratory mission visited Afghanistan. A UN/FAO mission visited Lebanon and drew up recommendations for cannabis replacement.
