Acknowledgments
The work on which this book is based has been funded by three org a n izations. The Drug Abuse Council, Inc. (DAC) supported a pilot project, in operation from 1 July 1973 to 30 June 1976, that determined the feasibility of the main study. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) funded the research from 1 July 1976 to 30 June 1979, and extended its grant from i July 1 979 to 30 June 1981 (#Roi-DA-o136o-o1). Standard Fittings Company generously provided funds to help with the final drafting of the manuscript of this book, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to each of these organizations.
From 1 July 1974, Wayne M. Harding was indispensable to the inception and continuation of each step of the work. In particular, credit is due him for the methodology and development of the quantification presented in chapter 3 and appendix C. The one other person who was with the project from its beginning and whose intelligence and devotion saw this manuscript through to completion is Miriam Winkeller. To both of them I want to express my t thanks and deep indebtedness.
I want to express my appreciation to a number of other people for their help in getting this project under way and working on it once it was in progress: Thomas E. Bryant, M.D., J.D., James V. DeLong, J.D., and Peter Goldberg of The Drug Abuse Council, Inc.; Dan J. Lettieri, Ph.D., of the National Institute on Drug Abuse; Irwin H. Davlin, president of Standard Fittings Company; Andrew T.
