Revised Grant Guidelines

The Grant Program revised its Guidelines this summer. Make sure you have a copy before applying this fall. Guidelines are available by regular mail, by email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), and over the Web (www.dpf.org). However, proposals cannot be sent to DPF via the Internet.

Proposals for the first round of 1999 grants must be postmarked by Thursday, October I. The next deadline is April I, 1999.

This April, the DPF Grant Program received over 80 proposals with requests totalling $2.3 million. Of these, the committee approved 35 proposals and awarded over $625,000 for the second half of the 1998 grant cycle. The following is a partial list of the grantees.

ACLU Foundation New York City — $5,000 Research on the high cost and ineffectiveness of workplace drug testing

ACT-UP Philadelphia Philadelphia, Penn. — $18,875 Coalition-building in the treatment/recovery community to support changing state syringe exchange laws

Alianza Positiva Inc. Mayaguez, Puerto Rico — $30,000 Harm reduction outreach

Andean Information Network Cochamba, Bolivia — $25,000 Public education and networking on issues related to the Andean region

Austin Harm Reduction Coalition Austin, Tex. — $23,500 Peer education outreach

California NORML San Francisco, Calif. — $25,000 Legal defense of cannabis buyers' groups against federal lawsuits

Chicago Recovery Alliance Chicago, III. — $20,000 Support for syringe exchange program

Civil Liberties Monitoring Project Redway, Calif. — $7,500 Public education to minimize abuses by law enforcement, especially a federal marijuana eradication campaign

Coalition Advocating Medical Marijuana Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. — $25,000 Public education on the medical use of marijuana

Commission for the Study of Crime and Addictions San Juan, Puerto Rico — $15,000 Education of public and professional organizations on public health and drug policies

Community of Color Outreach/United Church of Christ Roxbury, Mass. — $25,000 Support for harm reduction center

Correctional Association of N.Y. New York City — $25,000 Public education and advocacy against the Rockefeller Drug Laws

Council of State Governments/Eastern Regional Conference New York City — $22,000 Public opinion poll on alternatives to prison sanctions for non-violent drug offenders

DrugSense Porterville, Calif. — $25,000 Support for Internet newsletter and activist outreach: www.drugsense.org

DrugText Foundation Amsterdam, Netherlands — $5,000 American bandwidth for Internet-based information: www.drugtext.org

Families Against Mandatory Minimums Washington, D.C. — $25,000 Outreach and programming for African-American communities

Forfeiture Endangers American Rights Washington, D.C. — $18,000 Publication of a forfeiture defense manual

Harm Reduction Coalition New York City — $27,100 Work to eliminate syringe exchange sanctions through the National Coalition to Save Lives Now

La Fuerza Unida Contra EL SIDA Ponce, Puerto Rico — $9,000 Expansion of harm reduction outreach to drug users in the western region

Latino Commission on AIDS New York City — $7,000 Drug policy reform education for the Latino community in New York state

Marijuana Policy Project Foundation Washington, D.C. — $25,000 Assistance to state-level activists and education of national organizations

New jersey Public Health Association Moorestown, N.J. — $5,830 State-wide conference to increase exposure of harm reduction

The November Coalition Foundation Colville, Wash. — $29,810 Outreach and networking of drug war prisoners and their families; production of an audio CD of prisoner stories

People of Color Harm Reduction Community Partnership Roxbury, Mass. — $10,000 Hosting membership-development and community-education plans

Pima County Health Department Tucson, Ariz. — $24,500 Expand the syringe exchange program

Schaffer Online Library of Drug Policy Canyon County, Calif. — $10,000 Additions to online drug policy reform library: www.druglibrary.org

Women's International League for Peace & Freedom Philadelphia, Penn. — $25,000 Speaking tour of American and Colombian women on the drug war
