Studies suggest ART access among IDU communities impacts HIV transmission rates

Drug Abuse

Dear colleagues,

Please find here some exciting new findings that were reported during the 17th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistc Infections that suggest access to HAART among IDU communities can reduce rates of HIV transmission. Check out the abstract of the report 'Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy Eliminates HIV Epidemics in a Network Model of an Injecting Drug User Community' here: http://www.retroconference.org/2010/Abstracts/38240.htm

You can find presentations and podcasts from the conference here: http://www.retroconference.org/2010/data/files/webcast_2010.htm

Another article entitled 'Longitudinal community plasma HIV-1 RNA concentrations and incidence of HIV-1 among injecting drug users: prospective cohort study' also suggests that HAART access impacts prevention, published in BMJ in January 2009, is attached.

And thank you to Mauro Guarinieri for providing EHRN with the info.

Best,

Larisa
