Mexico's Drugs War: A Crime Writer's Perspective
By BBC
An interview with Paco Ignacio Taibo
September 10, 2010 "BBC" -- The Mexican authorities have arrested Edgar "La
Barbie" Valdez, allegedly one of the country's most wanted drug traffickers.
He is believed to have been involved in a violent struggle for control of the Beltran
Leyva drugs cartel.
Earlier this month, police found four decapitated bodies hanging from a bridge; the
heads were discovered nearby with a message warning that anyone supporting
Edgar Valdez would meet a similar fate.
The upsurge in drug-gang violence across the country has been linked to the
decision by President Felipe Calderon to take on the gangs using the military.
Mexico's top crime writer, Paco Ignacio Taibo, has written about the subject and has
strong views on the drugs war.
