Atropine

Atropine, scopolamine and related tropanes are found in various sorts of nightshade. The major ones are Atropa belladonna and Datura stramonium. These were important ingredients in the brew of European witches. One of them was used by smearing it on the vaginal labia. This practice is supposed to account for the stories about the smearing of witches' broomsticks. Scopolamine in particular is seen as causing the illusion of flying. (note 149)
