NEUROLEPTICA

These include various groups of substances with an antipsychotic effect. The most important are:

phenothiazines Largactil, Melleril, Nozinan, Phenergan, Anantensol, Terzufline etc.
butyrophenones Haldol etc.
rauwolfia derivatives reserpine etc
diphenylbutylpiperidines Imap, Orap, Semap
thioxanthenes Sordinol, Fluanxol

In most cases, the exact mechanism by which these substances work is partly or completely unknown. They seem to block specifically dopamine receptors, but they must have other points of entry as well.

As a result of the blocking of dopamine receptors in the nigro-stratial system, they all have locomotory disturbances as side-effects, though to varying degrees, which resemble those which occur with Parkinson's disease. Anti-psychotic medication is therefore usually accompanied by antiparkinson medication (e.g. akineton)

There is no psychical or physical dependence.
